Finding strength in being a single mom

July 4th 2001. Not single yet… but definitely beach bound.

I was not planning on blogging today but then  found  this picture . Looking at it  I see so many ironic messages . I was alone  even though I was married . I was headed to the beach; my happy place then and now.  The smiles were contagious . How could I be sad when I had my two greatest  gifts by my side? Even though the picture is faded and blurry,  I remember the day very clearly.  This was the day I found out that I needed to be brave and be single. Little did I know HOW brave I needed to be. Months later, I was divorced, financially broke, and my ex became a paraplegic.

” Always be full of Joy in the Lord; I say it again rejoice! Don’t worry about anything but pray about everything” Phillippians 4:6

Some say, ” Fake it to you make it,” or “A smile disguises a broken heart.” But I disagree. You don’t need to fake it.  TRUST God will give you answers and the courage to daily walk forward. He gave me the special gift of the Holy Spirit to guide me daily on my journey through the good, the bad ,and downright ugly.

Fifteen years later, I am still not married but I am not alone. Even though my kids are both in college and not glued to my hip, their smiles still make me contagiously happy. I don’t just visit my happy place on occasion , I moved there. Yes, to the beach. The picture is clearer now, too- literally and figuratively.

“Philippians 4:12 I have learned the secret of being content in every situation … I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.”

I trusted God  and he has given me the strength to be single. He whispered to me then that I would be alright and today I hear him loud and clear!  God has used my time of being single for a purpose. As a CFP(R) I teach  Women and Investing seminars to educate woman how to be financial independent. In addition, I lead a  single woman’s small group. We inspire each other to be strong and  be content – just where we are.

Hello! Thanks for stopping by. I have been single for the last twenty years raising my two beautiful children, Jake ( 27)and Tarah (26). I am a originally from Chicago but by listening to “The Whisper Within” I have recently moved to Southern California. I love to run, hike, bike, swim, and practice core yoga but have been sick for the last few years fighting Lyme disease. GOD will heal me but in the meantime, I choose to be happy and not settle for ordinary. I believe in the Fairytale, crave the butterflies, and surrender that God has the plan. Follow me on FB at The Whispers Within.

  6. This post has me all choked up! My ex-husband and I separated when our kids were 3 and 5 yrs old. It was always us against the world. Now both of my children are off in college (my son is a senior and my daughter is a sophomore) and I did remarry 2 yrs ago. When they were young I thought things were so hard. Now I look back on those days with great fondness. I wish we could go back, even if for one day.

    • Aww. I agree! It was US against the world. The 3 muskateers , like in the movie the HOLIDAY. I poured every once of energy into them, while my paraplegic ex remarried twice after me. I have no regrets. They are wonderful. Happy you remarried. I want that someday. You asre right though I look at their young innocent faces & just want to snuggle with them.
      Blessings to you, Lisa

  12. Thank you Lisa for the inspiration. There is a lot to learn from this, being a single mom seems like a struggle, but the focus we have for our little ones makes us forget of the stresses we go through and seeing the little smile on their faces warms up our hearts and secondly having God as the pillar of strength makes it even more simpler to go through our situations.

  19. I became a single mom 2 weeks ago today. I felt more alone during my 20 years with him than I have in the past two weeks. I think God has a purpose for me being single, or going through this entire crazy process of everything this year. Just waiting to see what it is….

I am so sorry to hear this. My heart aches for you. the verse that sticks out that carried me thru my journey was Philippians 4:6 “Don’t worry about anything but pray about everything.” lifting you up today. begging God that you get a reprieve. Any specific prayers? If you want I have A FB page The Whisper within. It may be easier to follow there. I will check out your blog. Big hugs, Lisa
